Well I finally got to go see 'I Love You, Man' today and boy it didn't disapoint. If you're a fan of comedies and just laughing out loud until you cry then this movie is one you have to go check out.
The movie reunites Paul Rudd and Jason Segel, two of the leading funny men in the business, as two lonely guys searching to find a best friend. In the movie Peter Klaven (Rudd) has gone his entire life surrounding himself with female companionship. Now he isn't a player or anything he just has always gotten along with the opposite sex better then that of his own sex. So Peter in the beginning of the movie proposes to his 8 month girlfriend Zooey, played by Rashida Jones. We find that Peter is involved in Real Estate and has big time plans for the future and even dreams of having his wife opening a second store in the area.
We also find out that Peter and Zooey have some rather intersting friends played by Jon Faverau and Jaime Presley, a couple whose definition of getting along is quite unnormal. Peter's family is also quite unusual as his parents are played by J.K. Simmons and Jane Curtin, and his brother is played by Andy Samberg, who we discover is gay and has a good relationship with his father, while Peter doesn't.
The supporting cast in addition to Paul Rudd just keep the audience, in this case myself, laughing the entire time. It's really a true friendship/love story. Realizing Peter doesn't have any guy friends at all, his family and girlfriend try setting him up on man-dates to try and find Peter a best man for his wedding. What goes on through the course of the movie is that friendships are not going to happen over night. After many unsuccessful man-dates, one involving an absolutely hillarious guy on guy make out scene, he finally comes across a guy at an open house, the house only owned by the Hulk himself, Lou Ferrigno, who is rather funny in the movie. There he meets Sydney (Segel.)
We learn that Sydney is only at the open house for the free food and to meet divorcees, but isn't having much luck. The two hit it off over sandwiches none the less and their friendship starts to develop. The funniest scene in the movie occurs when Peter firsts calls Sydney and stutters repeatedly over leaving a voicemail because he is so nervous. I was laughing so hard I was crying it was that funny. The two really start to form a good bond and become attached at the hip and form a true bro-mance with one another.
Rudd's awkwardness on screen keeps the movie feeling fresh and real, because as a guy it is something almost anyone can relate to. We make a new friend or meet a new girl/guy and it's special then the first time you want to give them a call, it's nerve racking. This movie explains just how real life friendships can be. They are full of laughter, sadness and going to Rush concerts and rocking out, which I love to do, just throwing it in there. The air guitar and bass playing is rather good. Oh the constant 'slap da bass' is quite priceless also. This movie is only going to be another launching pad for Rudd and Segel, as they both prove they can headline a movie.
Box office numbers for this movie weren't great and quite frankily after seeing this movie I'm not sure why. This movie is a non-stop laugh ride and also tells a great story, the making of a great movie. And this is what I would call a great movie. It's full of awkward jokes, catchphrases and laughs that come out of anywhere and everywhere. The cast is great and contributes so well to this movie.
TK's take: 4 out of 4 stars, a truly great comedy movie!
