Ok I just want to start this by saying 3-D is awesome, epic, and fantastic. I can't recall ever going to a 3-D movie as a child, so couldn't pass this opportunity up and especially because this movie was actually a good movie.
Finally what kids have been waiting for, the tale of Monsters vs. Aliens. This cast is full of A-list stars including, Paul Rudd, Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie and Kiefer Sutherland, and that's just naming a few. So on with the review shall we, get on your 3-D glasses, sit back and enjoy the ride!
The movie starts off with Susan (Witherspoon) who is about to marry the man of her dreams, Derek (Rudd.) Derek is a pretty famous TV personality on a local news station, who dreams of making it big and can be rather self-centered at times. The two on the day of their wedding talk about the future and Susan gets rather crushed as the plans to go on their honeymoon to Paris are squandered away because Derek gets a call from Fresno to become part of their news team. So after doing some soul searching, what should happen but Susan is crushed by a falling meteorite, and is transformed into ginormica, her monster name. She becomes very tall and possesses super strength and is kidnapped by a secret government organization that holds other monsters.
It is there where we meet Dr. Cockroach (Laurie), B.O.B. (Rogen), and the missing Link (played by Will Arnett.) We also meet insectasourus (sorry for the spelling) it is at this facility where the five of them start to bond and Susan can't believe her eyes. It is a facility that no one knows about and it is where monsters go to stay forever without ever being let out, until now. We finally get to meet Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson) whose determined to get the source of what caused Susan to become a "monster." After wreaking havoc in downtown San Fransisco, the monsters are promised freedom in exchange for helping the U.S. government to defeat the aliens. The battle ensues and without giving anything away it's full of awesome 3-D special effects and really good punch line and adult-ish jokes at times as well.
Without giving anything else away, the battle is taking onto the alien ship where Susan and the other monsters must fight to stop Gallaxhar and his armies from invading earth before all is destroyed, in order for Gallaxhar to rebuild his planet.
'Monsters vs. Aliens' works very well because of good writing and the actors portraying these characters. Rogen is brilliant as the indestructible blob and Laurie shows off his comedic side as Dr. Cockroach. The movie never really gets dull and keeps the audience laughing through-out. I definitely advise anyone a fan of these actors and in need of a good laugh, go see this movie. The 3-D special effects are truly flawless and it still has me scratching my head in just how that entire ordeal is even created?
The movie while is very swayed towards kids actually works for teens and young adults such as myself. There are a lot of one-liners mostly from Rogen that keep you laughing and wanting more. Stephen Colbert and Kiefer Sutherland both add to the movie as the President and General respectively. So for those in need of something to go and see and want to be treated to a three dimensional out of this world experience, I advise you to go check this out, and unleash the inner monster within you (cheesy.)
TK's take: 'Monsters vs. Aliens' gets 4 out of 5.
