TK's review of 'Terminator Salvation'

The TK-800 takes on 'Terminator Salvation'

I've been looking to this day for a long time. This movie not only tops my summer movie list, but it was the movie I was looking forward to most for the entire year. And after giving it some time to let the movie sink it, I only have one thing to say about this movie- it was incredible. It was visually stunning and hands down the loudest movie I've ever seen in theaters. It was so loud but it only added to the experience that was Judgment day 2018.

I'm glad to see that the directors and actors took this franchise very seriously because their hard work is clearly portrayed on the screen and it is wonderful. McG, the films director tells a wonderful story about the last humans on earth, the resistance, as they try to stay alive no matter what against Skynet and their army of Terminators. The cast led by Christian Bale and Sam Worthington provide great examples of acting and the action in this movie literally doesn't stop. From second one to the start of the credits, it's action around every turn.

The attention to details that McG and his team paid towards the new machines is spot on as all the new machines and weapons look so awesome. The machines have become so advance and are wiping out humans left and right, all seems so lost for the human cause, but thanks to Connor he keeps the resistance's pulse alive.

John Connor (Bale), is deep underground and as viewed by some as the war's savior but some see him as nothing more then a crazy prophet. Connor early on in the film is on a mission to retrieve some piece of data and in the midst of doing that his entire team is wiped out by the T-600's who are pretty bad ass. This film highlights a lot of fights and interaction between the machines and humans which wasn't really seen in the previous three installments so that was refreshing to see. The fights that Bale and company have with the terminators are sharp and well played and seem so realistic.

Another interesting plot in the movie was how Connor would listen to old tapes his mother left him that offered him all the advice she had in order to take down Skynet, so that was cool to see how that was mixed in the movie. It shows the influence that Sarah Connor really haves in the movie's franchise and it was nice to see the new film makers not ignore that fact.

The film does a great job of telling a story about how the last bit of humanity that is left in the world is banding together to try and stay alive no matter what. In enters a man named Marcus Wright (Worthington) who in the beginning of the film is seen on death row as apparently he was responsible for three murders. A woman who works with the government offers him what she calls a second chance and tells him that his body will be used for science. He signs the paper and last we see of him he is being injected with something.

Flash forward to the future, we see him emerge as his normal self not knowing what truly lies underneath his flesh, he is the newest T-800 model. He wonders around where he is attacked in what used to be Los Angeles by a terminator unit and is saved by a mysterious teenager who we discover is Kyle Reese played by Anton Yelchin. The two work together to take the unit out and form a relationship. He manages to fix a radio that didn't work before and it is then where the two of them hear Connor talking over telling everyone that they are the resistance.

Together they set out to try and find Connor and the rest of the resistance but encounter a lot along the way. Kyle is captured by a skynet prisoner machine and Marcus meets a resistance pilot who sees the good in him. Marcus becomes injured and when the medical team examines his injuries they discover that he is a machine. In what is one of the most powerful lines of the movie, Connor says, “You tried to kill my mother Sarah Connor, you tried to kill my father Kyle Reese but you will not kill me.” The two look into each other eye's and Connor is so unsure because Marcus sees himself as a human not the other way around.

Connor can't decide how to handle this situation because of fear that this machine could kill everyone here at his base in a second. Marcus informs Connor that Kyle is alive but is being held by Skynet. The two inevitably work together to infiltrate one of Skynet's headquarters to spring Kyle before he is ultimately terminated. Fights break out and we finally get a cameo by none other then Arnold as a kick ass terminator. Him and Connor engage in a fight before ultimately Marcus stops him but not before tragedy strikes, but I won't spoil it for you.

'Terminator Salvation' has one hell of a story and it's played out so well and the action is so intense it will have you jumping out of your seat on more then one occasion. The support cast including Bryce Dallas Howard and Common add complex and emotional characters in addition to Bale and Worthington. Yelchin plays a very emotional and strong willed Kyle Reese and adds a new dimension to this character.

McG tells a very good story and leaves the viewers wanting more. The movie mixes great action scenes with heart breaking moments and compelling characters going through their own personal fights to stay alive. Just when you think all hope is lost, there is always one thing that comes along that will keep the human spirit alive. You are the resistance!

I'll be back, TK-800.

TK's take: 4.5/5 stars
