Alright, first things first. What is with the critics out there bashing this movie? Did we not see the same picture or are you people just blind to what a good movie is? I have been a huge X-Men nerd my entire life and am not ashamed to admit it and this movie surpassed all of my expectations and I set them pretty high. The movie doesn't grow tiring or boring because you want to know why, it's telling a story. That's right isn't it? A movie like this granted is supposed to be full of action and while it is it also has to tell a story about how this boy, Jimmy becomes the animal known as Wolverine and this movie succeeds in telling just that story not to mention throws in a bunch of bad ass mutants along the way!
While my only complaint is that a few of the special effects are a bit weak and could of used a bit more time in the editing room, the movie delivers some kick ass fighting scenes between mutants and also sets you off on a very emotional journey and it puts you right next to Logan and all that he has to go through on his path to becoming Wolverine. Many reviews from the so called 'expert' critics say the movie moves at a slow pace and doesn't offer up action, well I would like to respectfully disagree. I think Gavin Hood, the films director intertwines his very good ability to tell a story without losing the audiences interest and for those who might only be there to see all action because a movie can't be non stop action people, it's just not obtainable. And besides what is a great movie without a story?
The journey of Jimmy as we first come to know him in the film sees him bed sick under the watchful protection of his older brother Victor, who we also see is growing in his claws as Sabretooth. The two seem very close and have the unspoken brotherly bond. So one night a man who has had one drink too many comes barging in to the boys home and with Jimmy upstairs a gun shot is fired and hits the boys father. Jimmy runs to the aid of his fallen father and it is then when his claws first appear as through his rage they are unleashed. They are not claws however but rather they appear to be long bones. Jimmy gets up and charges ( a very common theme in the movie by the way) at the man who killed him and we learn that the murderer is really Jimmy and Victor's father.
The two boys vow to run away and keep each other safe no matter who gets in their way and they do so. Together they fight in many wars unable to be hurt and protect each other for decades until one day they are captured and get an unexpected visitor by a man named William Stryker. He offers these now fully grown men a way out and to join a team full of people with special talents.
The two brothers accept Stryker's offer and are on the next plane out of the country and they meet the likes of John Wraith, The Blob, Bolt, Wade and Agent Zero. Together they make a raid on the building and I must give credit to Hood for his brilliant way of displaying all of their abilities. From Agent Zero's absolutely amazing shooting, to the spectacular Wade sword display where he takes out about 10 gunmen. And I gotta give credit to Ryan Reynolds who made that character one to enjoy and laugh at.
After threatening to kill innocent people that is where Logan decides to mutiny and leave the group because he is not that kind of person. He moves to Canada and becomes what a else, a lumberjack and meets the love of his life. Well things don't stay quiet for long as mutants from his old group start to be killed by a mysterious person and Stryker tracks down Logan and asks him to help his country. Logan is put through the painful process of becoming Wolverine and lets just say it isn't a walk in the park. He awakens the animal that many knew was inside of him and just goes crazy.
After things unravel, Wolverine learns who is behind the plot of killing mutants and whom may or may not be dead and vows to bring it all down. He learns that the operations base is on the 'Island' and must go and find... cue the drum roll... GAMBIT! Ah yes, Gambit just takes the movie to an entirely new playing field. The power he has is so awesome and just bad ass, sorry it is cool.
Wolverine and Gambit get into a little altercation outside a local bar before it's interrupted by who else.. Victor. And the chaos ensues and it's all just one good fight scene.
Gambit and Wolverine actually form a bond and together go to the island to bring it down and free the other prisoners/mutants from their cells where we learn Stryker is doing experiments on them as he is trying to create the ultimate weapon, in which he calls preparing his government for an inevitable confrontation.
Without spoiling the end of the movie, the 's' hits the fan. There is an epic closing battle between Wolverine, Victor and DEADPOOL! It is visually well done and it was really cool to see on the big screen.
TK's final thought: While the movie leaves you wanting more the question is, whether or not fans will get it. Rumors are circulating that a sequel is in the works along with planned Magneto spinoffs and a possible Gambit movie but only time will tell. X-Men Origins: Wolverine tells a very gut wrenching story and delivers it quite nicely in accompany with plenty of big fights and even bigger explosions. If the rest of the summer movies are anything like this one, then 2009 is shaping up to be a pretty damn good year.
TK's Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
